A snapshot from Can Man

As this year draws to a close, I have something to whet your appetite from our December/January issue and our resident Can Man and his irreverent ramblings. Seeing as it’s at the end of the year, here is a snapshot of this year’s industry Room 101s. For those of you not fully acquainted with the phrase, think George Orwell’s 1984.

Here are Can Man’s Room 101s for 2017:

  • It’s time to do away with industry awards

On social media and in the print press I’m constantly reminded that insert can maker’s name here, has won an industry award. Does anyone care?

  • Is there such a thing as innovation?

We are frequently reminded that the industry is innovating, particularly in a Metpack year. But are they really? Are we just trying to convince ourselves that the industry is moving forward, to justify marketeers existence?

  • The best way to spoil a good walk?

I’m not one to talk shop too often, but are we letting the social side of the industry get in the way of business? I can’t see why trade shows at golf courses are beneficial for anything other than trying to knock a couple of shots off one’s handicap?

  • Industry 4. Snore

Who actually knows what Industry 4.0 means? I feel like the packaging industry has swallowed a thesaurus of made up buzzwords.

  • Craft drinks = no thanks

Is it more a trend or anti commercialism and globalisation, rather than a trend of choice taste?

  • There’s still much to do on sustainability

Although we’re beginning to do a lot more as an industry on this issue, we’re still not a unified voice. How we do this, I don’t know, but we need to keep banging the metal drum. Enough is not being done, and it frustrates me.

Some rather controversial comments from Can Man is this issue – do you agree with his Room 101s?

It’s Bell Publishing’s Christmas party tomorrow, so I’m sure that’s my content taken care of for next week’s blog!

Until then…
