The future of can making

How do we secure our future as an industry? There are many ways to do this as I’m sure you’re all aware – from making sound investments in emerging markets to buying new equipment that will enable your business to grow along with increasing demand. What I am talking about more specifically though is people.

People make any industry what it is. They define it, they operate it, they live it every working day (and often weekends too). Therefore, as employers you should look to invest heavily in your people, as without them you would cease to be.

I spend a lot of time travelling around the world, visiting different areas of this industry and observing working practices on every level, from CEO to shop floor, and I have to say I am always impressed at the dedication of the people I meet.

Many have been in the business for several years, and you don’t stick around in a company for your whole working life unless it is giving something back.

So, how do you encourage your staff to be proactive, to work harder and slicker, to care even more than they do already?

I have seen employees incentivised with holidays, cars, bonuses, development opportunities and recently, three young apprentices were even sent to Brazil (half way around the world for them) in order to represent the company they are starting out in.

By nurturing emerging talent and focusing on the talent we already have in droves, we can ensure that the future continues to look bright for can making.

How do you ensure your people are happy, incentivised and motivated? Share your own experiences below and we will publish your comments accordingly.

Thanks,

Richard
