The human element

On a recent factory tour, something occurred to me that raised a rather important question – will the human element continue to be phased out when it comes to manufacturing?

As technology has advanced, the need for a body on the workshop floor has gradually reduced, and whilst there will always be a need for skilled operators, are we starting to see the end of some trades?

Welding, for example, is something that can be undertaken by a robot. Place your metal, select the programme you require and wait 15 minutes or so for the perfect weld to be achieved. Suddenly you are able to weld six times the amount of metal than a skilled welder can by hand and the cost can be offset relatively quickly through increased production.

It was actually slightly eerie to see so few employees on the factory floor, but this today is a sign of absolute efficiency. Operations are becoming so slick, so streamlined and efficient that only those members of staff that absolutely have to be present are present.

Production runs like clockwork and will operate seamlessly and ceaselessly day after day, hour after hour, all year round.
