Coca-Cola sets sustainability targets

Coca-Cola is aiming to recover 50% of the cans and bottles that it introduces into the marketplace by 2015.
According to the company’s latest sustainability report, titled Reasons to Believe, it intends to help ensure that an amount of bottles and cans equal to 50% of the ones it introduces into the marketplace are recovered annually.
Coca-Cola currently recovers 36% of the equivalent bottles and cans it sends to the market.
The drinks giant is also aiming to source 25% of its PET plastic from recycled or renewable material by 2015.
In 2010, aluminium cans made up 12% of Coca-Cola’s global packaging mix with the majority (54%) made up by PET. The elements that make up the remaining 34% are as follows: refillable glass (11%); fountain (11%); refillable PET (7%); glass (1%); other (4%).
“If we are to achieve our 2020 Vision goal of doubling system revenue and servings over the course of this decade, we will need to grow in a way that continues to enrich the world around us,” Coca-Cola chief executive Muhtar Kent said in a statement. “I am pleased to report that we have made solid progress toward that end since our last sustainability report, the 2009/2010 Sustainability Review.”
