In 2023, a total of 796 million aluminium tubes and 575 million aluminium aerosol cans were delivered to Germany. Compared to 2022, this represents a 4% increase for aluminium tubes and a slight rise of 0.5% for aerosol cans. Manufacturers of aluminum tubes and aerosol cans reported good delivery volumes in the first half of 2023, followed by a slight decline in the second half.

According to Clemens Behrenbruch, chairman of the tubes, cans and extruded parts division of Aluminium Deutschland (AD), “the strong demand for aluminium tubes, particularly from the pharmaceutical sector, underscores the crucial role of our products in meeting essential packaging requirements. The industry’s performance in 2023 reflects our resilience and adaptability in dealing with challenging market conditions.”

Sector challenges

Despite some improvements, energy prices remain high, with uncertainty surrounding availability in the coming years. Regulatory matters and sustainability requirements also present bureaucratic burdens on companies.

The skilled labour shortage remains one of the most acute challenges facing the industry. New employees need a lot of time to familiarise themselves with the job and it is very difficult to find suitable applicants. In addition, higher sickness rates exacerbate the situation.

In particular, it is up to politicians to create an economic policy framework that offers companies planning security, says AD. The industry emphasises how important it is to take proactive political measures to ensure competitiveness.

Outlook for 2024

While the industry remains cautiously optimistic for 2024, uncertainties regarding energy prices, skilled labour shortages, and regulatory challenges require proactive management. “Nevertheless, we are committed to innovation, sustainability, and meeting evolving consumer demands,” said Behrenbruch.
