Judgement day

I’m a judge in this year’s Aerobal world aluminium aerosol can award.
It’s obviously an honour for me to be involved in the competition, which began originally in Europe as the aluminium aerosol can of the year. As Aerobal grew to represent the industry on a global scale so did the competition, which was turned into its current world-wide format in 2006.

Obviously, I’m not going to say how I voted but it was great to have a look at the cans in the competition. It was a bit like Christmas when a large box arrived on my desk this week and I was able to pull can after can out and then sit there scrutinising each one.

It was really novel for me as in previous roles, I’ve been the organiser of awards and competitions so to see it from the other side really was much more fun. The way the judging process works is the organiser asks you to pick two winners. One currently on the market and one that is a prototype. The prototypes were the more interesting as you get a sneak peak at what the market is developing into.

But that’s not to take away from what is already out there and the cans currently on the market or soon to be there are really pushing forward. Both in what can be achieved in terms of shape and colouring. The results are due to be announced later this year.
