UK-based Blends Flavours & Colours has announced an investment into its canning capabilities as the business grows and moves away from plastic packaging.

In a recent Food Manufacture article, factory manager Andrew Richardson explained that one of the company’s main customers was interested in canning. Initially, in 2020, the company invested in a canning line that handled up to 2,500 cans per hour, but within three months, the capacity was filled and the company could not keep up with demand. This led to its recent investment in a new canning line from Krones that will eventually see the company processing up to 20,000 cans per hour.

The Krones Modufil was installed at Blends Flavours & Colours’ Knowsley, UK, site on 8 June 2022, and has the capacity to process 140 million cans per year. The equipment also allows the company to diversify its can size options. Previously, it could offer 250ml slim and 330ml sleek cans; now it offers 150ml-500ml cans.

To make room for the Krones line, Blends also underwent three months of demolition work which included improving the site water, incoming main and gas main.
