Industrial Physics, a leading global test and measurement specialist, has released two automated gauges designed to enhance accuracy and efficiency in metal packaging: the Torus Z606 Automatic Score Inspection Gauge and the Torus Z345 Automatic Colour Inspection Gauge.

Developed by Torus, a specialist testing brand within the Industrial Physics portfolio specialising in measurement, automation, metrology, and manufacturing equipment, the systems offer advanced inspection capabilities that solve critical challenges for can and end manufacturers. Utilising world-leading and innovative technology, these instruments have been designed to support and redefine quality control in can and end manufacturing.

With global demand for metal packaging expected to continue rising throughout 2025, manufacturers are under increasing pressure to reduce waste, manage costs, and maximize production output. According to recent industry research conducted by Industrial Physics, 41% of food and beverage packaging professionals agree that their organisation is planning to take an innovative approach in the next three years. The Torus Z606 and Z345 gauges have pioneering technology that will help professionals meet key goals.

The Torus Z606 Automatic Score Gauge enables the highest accuracy, repeatability, and usability for the measurement of score residual of can ends. The score on a can end directly impacts a customer’s ability to open the product safely, quickly and is a critical parameter for end manufacturers.

By leveraging technology in the testing process, end makers can transition to a more automatic, non-contact approach which removes operator bias, provides greater efficiency and saves on overall operation costs. The system facilitates pre-programmed positions too which guarantee that ends are being measured in the same place, every time. This allows metal packaging professionals to achieve standardisation in the test approach across multiple plants, globally.

The Torus Z345 is an automatic colour and artwork inspection system to integrate X-Rite technology. Designed for decorated aluminium and steel beverage cans, the Z345 allows for high-resolution colour scanning and inspection at pre-defined checkpoints, capable of inspecting body diameter, straight walled, and finished cans.

Cans can be loaded in any orientation, either on to an automatic in-feed conveyor or directly from the production line. Its high-resolution colour-scan camera reads and ‘unwraps’ the label and aligns it to a master image, with the can accurately presented to the Ci64 spectrophotometer for inspection at pre-defined, user selected location. The automatic process enhances quality control while reducing the labor required and the risk of human error. The Torus Z345 increases the accuracy of colour assessment and accelerates the process overall, facilitating cost savings, robust data generation and increased output.

Speaking on the launch, Darren Hawkings, sales manager, Industrial Physics, shared: “These launches mark a step forward in automation for metal packaging. The Z606 and Z345 bring new score gauge and colour inspection capabilities to manufacturers looking to maintain high quality standards despite tightening resources.

“Our recent research – surveying 380 food and beverage packaging professionals across the globe – revealed that companies are predominantly already, or plan on, taking an innovative approach. At Industrial Physics, we’re committed to supporting innovation through technology that delivers accuracy, efficiency, and reliability to these professionals.”
