The Brazilian Aluminum Can Association (Abralatas) has released the 2025 edition of its ESG Report, consolidating the past year’s sustainability and innovation achievements of the aluminium beverage can industry. Developed with the support of member companies Ardagh Metal Packaging, Ball, Canpack, Crown, and Stolle Machinery, the report reaffirms the industry’s global leadership in circularity and its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through transparency, social responsibility, and institutional dialogue.

In a year marked by progress in regulatory modernisation and a strengthened dialogue with public authorities, Abralatas stood out in advocating for strategic national policies such as Tax Reform, the Recycling Incentive Law, and the Brazilian Emissions Trading System (SBCE). These milestones underscore the association’s role in shaping policies that promote the circular economy and position Brazil toward a low-carbon future, it says.

“Our main commitment is to transform the sector’s circularity experience into a competitiveness and development agenda for the country. The 2025 ESG Report reflects the maturity of an ecosystem that brings together innovation, inclusion, and socio-environmental responsibility,” said Cátilo Cândido, executive president of Abralatas.

Among the highlights is Abralatas’ groundbreaking partnership with the G20, which provided aluminium canned mineral water at all G20 meetings held in Brazil – an initiative that elevated the country’s international image as a benchmark in sustainability and circular economy. Another milestone was the launch of the Brazilian Standard NBR 17194, the world’s first technical quality standard for aluminium cans, developed in partnership with Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT). This reinforces the sector’s commitment to transparency and its ongoing pursuit of excellence in offering the most sustainable and safest packaging for consumers.

The report also emphasises the achievement of a zero-landfill goal by the founding companies of Abralatas, which now send less than 1% of generated waste to landfills. This accomplishment promotes waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting in alignment with circular economy principles.

Additionally, the report details the launch of a sector-wide decarbonisation project focused on emissions measurement and readiness for the future regulated carbon market. This initiative positions the aluminium can as a scalable, low-impact solution, recognised for its energy efficiency, high recyclability, and contribution to Brazil’s climate goals.

“The report captures the collective purpose of our member companies: to develop the sector through dialogue, innovation, and socio-environmental responsibility. Abralatas’ institutional role is a driving force for transformation, connecting the ESG agenda to public policy development and the consolidation of a fairer, more competitive, and sustainable economic model,” added Cândido.
