“Fundamental” environmental role for steel
The recyclability of steel and its openness about green credentials will help it to play a fundamental role over the next 20 years, delegates at Euro CanTech were told.
Alexander Mohr, general secretary of steel manufactures association Apeal, speaking at Euro Cantech last week explained steel has a current recycling rate of 74%.
Mohr (pictured) says he’s one of 22,000 lobbyists in Brussels, Belgium, trying to get the attention of European ministers.
He said, “Your competitors are doing the same as you so you have to stand out. The recycling element is an important part of this.
“Steel plays a fundamental role in our challenging future. The environment will focus the debate for the next 20 years.
“Steel has the best recycling rate of all materials now we’re at 74% European Union wide and some countries are over 90%.”
Mohr went on to explain the 74% rate in 2011 represented 2.6 million tonnes of recycled steel.
