Keeping it green

This week is a big one for international sustainability, with Global Recycling Day having taken place on 18 March, today (20 March) marking World Rewilding Day and it being Food Waste Action Week in the UK. It’s a great opportunity for companies to celebrate the positive impact their work has on the environment, acknowledging their progress while still noting what is left to be done.
Metal packaging cannot be championed enough, especially on Global Recycling Day and this Food Waste Action Week, it being not only infinitely recyclable but the best choice for preserving food for longer. Steel for Packaging Europe has long been educating its followers about the benefits of steel for food packaging, and continues to do so this week. The company’s LinkedIn posts can be found here for educational reading and viewing.
Rewilding is perhaps a more complex subject for our industry. During the pandemic, this topic seemed more prolific, as human inactivity allowed nature to flourish more than it perhaps ever had done in some of our lifetimes. So now that many sites are now running back at full capacity and happily so, it’s important to establish avenues of giving back to the environment. I always find a spark of joy in reading press releases about site expansions that also include details of how the local flora and fauna are being protected. More of this, please.
As I’m writing this, it’s surprisingly warm outside in Gravesend, and has got my mind turning to my garden and what I can plant for the rest of the year to encourage more wildlife into my modest space. All around our local area, blossom trees and daffodils are emerging, the bees are out and it does finally feel like spring has emerged.
It being spring also means that the 2025 Grand Tour is around the corner, and in just 10 days we’ll be heading to Brussels! The excitement is definitely ramping up for three days of learning, networking and celebrating innovation in the metal packaging industry. We can’t wait to share it with you. Don’t miss it – last-minute signups can head here, or email Aimee Carnell [email protected] (especially if you’re a can maker as registration is now open to you for free).
In other news, we’ve just gone to press with our April edition, so look out for that soon!
