Positive perception

The latest research from The Can Makers UK shows positive progress on the public’s perception of cans, citing that two-thirds (65 per cent) of British consumers believe that cans are the most circular packaging option.
According to this study, the claimed use of beverage cans and the perception of cans as a suitable pack format in all market segments is continuing to rise. More than 90 per cent of consumers surveyed confirmed the purchase of one or more canned drinks in the last year, an increase of seven per cent on 2023 figures released by The Can Makers UK.
The shift in perception is reportedly most notable in the ready-to-drink (RTD) sector. Canned cocktails were rated as ‘Very Sustainable’ by more than 60 per cent of respondents, which is an increase of 21 per cent versus 2023.
The study also revealed that 84 per cent of UK consumers believe beverage cans are the easiest packaging format to recycle, while 78 per cent confirmed they preferred cans for their convenience.
With the labels on plastic bottles often not being recyclable, as well as the widespread awareness of plastic waste, it’s no wonder the benefits of metal are being recognised more and more.
The impact of packaging design on purchasing behaviour was also analysed by the trade body. It was highlighted as a significant driver for those aged 18 to 24, while consumers aged between 25 and 34 were found among the most likely to associate innovative design with more premium brands. Being in the latter bracket myself, I can’t help but agree. And with the UK’s summer season fast approaching, I think we’ll see more purchasing data increases for the likes of canned cocktails and wine.
In other news, we’ve just wrapped up on the June edition of the magazine here. We’re looking forward to sharing it with you very soon. Sarah Hills and I are also off to Wales for an exciting site visit, which you’ll hear more about next week!
