Following Industrial Physics’ recent acquisition of Torus, CEO, Barry Lyon and director, Chris Freshman, caught up with CanTech International about what this means for innovators across the globe

Industrial Physics’ acquisition of Torus was announced back at the beginning of July this year. What sparked this change for each company?

Lyon: Across packaging industries, particularly in food and beverage, we are seeing continued incentive to innovate which is driving packaging manufacturers to explore opportunities and the support available. We exist to protect the integrity of brands, by helping them to ensure the quality and safety of their products, so we are always evaluating how to better support our customers. When we learned about Torus, it was very clear how our partnership would benefit customers globally, adding 65 new solutions for metal packaging professionals.

Freshman: From our first conversations with Industrial Physics, we could see how committed the team were to enhancing the level of support offered to packaging professionals. Safety and quality have always been core elements to Torus, so it was really important that we would share this focus. I was particularly interested to understand how Industrial Physics’ global infrastructure would help make our solutions more accessible for packaging professionals across geographies. This allows us to offer the comprehensive, localised support that we are known for to even more companies, which is crucial amid high levels of innovation.

What does the acquisition mean for packaging innovators across the world? Freshman: From a product level, with our expertise in solutions for two-piece can making combined with Industrial Physics’ overarching metal packaging portfolio, packaging innovators can access an even more extensive range of equipment. This helps us to meet even more specialised needs. On top of this, the diverse expertise and experiences of our teams can be shared collaboratively to facilitate learning and improved approaches, culminating in a better level of support for our customers. We are incredibly proud of the customer service that we are known for throughout industries, and through our integration, our learnings can feed into joint operations. There are so many opportunities for optimisation and development as a result of the acquisition, it’s been a really enjoyable process.

Lyon: Enhancing the support we can offer is a priority for Industrial Physics, and having completed the acquisition, we can be an even stronger partner to our customers. As Chris

mentioned, the incorporation of new solutions and expertise have meant that we can now cover an even broader set of their test and measurement

needs. We look forward to discussing these opportunities with packaging professionals across the world at their sites and key industry events including Metpack, and Cannex in 2025. These conversations can really make the difference in a project because by gaining an understanding of the quality and safety implications in the earlier stages, more effective decisions can be made.

How have you observed customer’s needs changing over the past few years? Lyon: Our research into the responsibilities of packaging professionals over the past three years has helped shape what our support looks like. The research has highlighted challenges, eg, we know that many do not have the time for training and upskilling on crucial areas such as testing, instead relying on the expertise of third-party specialists. We now share our help and advice in short form content in the ‘Knowledgebase’ section on our website to make educational resources more accessible for those struggling for time.

Freshman: I completely agree, we have definitely seen an increase in the level of support and expertise that packaging professionals are looking for in the last few years. Industrial Physics’ commitment to gathering the latest industry insights and educating on these topics was an element of the company that we were particularly enthusiastic to start collaborating on. We look forward to bringing the expertise of our Torus team into the Knowledgebase and wider resources going forwards too.

What should our readers be looking out for in 2025?

Freshman: We’ve already got a busy calendar of industry events booked in for 2025, so come and see us to hear about the solutions and support we have referred to. Face to face conversations

are such a great opportunity to hear about developments and how a shift in approach could have many benefits for your company’s objectives.

Lyon: Definitely come and see us as Chris said. Also, keep an eye out for further announcements from Industrial Physics on our continued commitment to growth. Can makers will

be pleased to hear that we have recently completed the acquisition of Sensory Analytics the suppliers of industry-leading SpecMetrix. This development means

that by 2025, customers will see an even stronger portfolio of solutions with that additional support in three-piece can making in particular.
