In 2025, we will commemorate the centennial of a landmark achievement in the history of can seamers: the Canco 08.
Designed in early 1925, the Canco 08 quickly earned acclaim for its exceptional reliability and robustness. Developed by the American Can Company, commonly known as Canco, this machine was engineered to serve as a dependable workhorse for the canning industry – a role it continues to fulfill even today.
Established in 1901, the American Can Company rapidly became a major force in the packaging sector. By the early 20th century, Canco had solidified its position as a leader in metal can production, driving numerous innovations in canning technology. The introduction of the Canco 08 further reinforced the company’s reputation for engineering excellence.
Building on the engineering foundations of the earlier Model 006, which was limited to seaming cans with a maximum diameter of 404 (105mm), the Canco 08 was designed to accommodate a wider range of can sizes. It could handle diameters from 307 to 603 (83 to 153mm), with the potential to reach 700 (178mm) when outfitted with specialised equipment.
The Canco 08 features a single rotating seaming head equipped with two first-operation rolls and two second-operation rolls. Its lid feeding system is fully automatic, utilising two separating knives similar to those found in the Angelus P series. This system operates flawlessly with sanitary lids but occasionally encounters challenges with modern easy open or peel-off lids. Optional features include the topper, for managing overflowing products, and an impact lid marker.

At the time of its creation, the Canco 08 represented a significant technological advancement by offering dual drive options: it could be powered either by a flat belt connected to a power shaft in the plant ceiling or by an independent electric motor – an innovation for its era. With a production speed of 30 to 40 cans per minute (cpm), the Canco 08 remains competitive, even after a century of service.
The machine was meticulously designed to maintain a specific can format. While it is possible to change formats, the process is intricate and requires numerous parts. The seaming head is a technological marvel, although its control system necessitates the use of rolls with varying diameters depending on the format and head size. This complexity can occasionally result in sizing errors.
The Canco 08’s manual is exemplary, featuring clear illustrations, detailed assembly drawings, and straightforward tables with part numbers to guide users in selecting the correct spare parts.
Renowned for its reliability and durability, the Canco 08 has earned a reputation as a true workhorse. Despite its age, hundreds of these machines are still operational worldwide. Notably, some manufacturers in Thailand continue to produce replicas of the Canco 08 with minimal modifications, a testament to the machine’s exceptional design.
A mechanical project that has thrived for a century is a rare achievement, underscoring the extraordinary legacy of the Canco 08.
