Sandvik invests in can tooling centre

Sandvik has invested in a Can Tooling Global Competence Centre for two-piece metal containers in order to support the challenges and demands of the canning industry.

Sandvik Hyperion, supplier of premium tooling, has recently equipped its plant in Barcelona to create an agile manufacturing setup and fully support customers on every aspect involved in product development and productivity.

The Barcelona site has over 20 years of experience with manufacturing of can tooling supporting global customers with an integrated manufacturing process from ready to press cemented carbide powder to the finished part. The complete product range including cupper press, bodymaker and necker tools is manufactured using the latest Sandvik materials, grinding technology and metrology.

Services such as tooling design for new cans, technical support, onsite audits and support for optimisation of production lines, consultancy in tooling efficiency and sustainability programs are also offered by a specialised team with long experience, global presence and focus in can tooling. Can makers also have the opportunity to sell their used cemented carbide tools to Sandvik Hyperion that will have them recycled and turned into usable raw material for future production.

Besides Barcelona, Sandvik Hyperion has a manufacturing facility in Sao Paulo, Brazil supported by a large R&D international team. In order to facilitate the introduction of innovations that Sandvik is bringing to the can making industry as well as enhance service and support, the Minneapolis production site in the US that was only focused in finishing, is being transferred to Barcelona during 2016.
