CarnaudMetalbox Engineering (CMbE) increased its manufacturing capabilities during the second half of 2019 in order to keep up with ever-growing demand, which has culminated in the long-term lease of an industrial unit only minutes from the company’s main site (Unit 9 Hirstwood Works in Shipley, West Yorkshire).

The new Dockfield Road site comes complete with four travelling overhead cranes to support safer assembly operations, three bays and two full height shutter access doors. The 1,906m2 (20,448 ft) site also includes offices, a canteen area and dedicated parking spaces.

This new addition increases the company’s facilities to 180,000 ft2, enabling CMbE to expand its production capacity to keep up with the increase in activity.

Tony Podmore, CMbE’s manufacturing engineering manager, said: ”Due to business growth, the need to expand our assembly working space became a real challenge at the end of 2019. The expansion project to convert Unit 9 Hirstwood Works into a safe and useable space had multifaceted challenges. From the end of December 2019 to March 2020 a cross functional team from CMbE, worked through these challenges with external stakeholders to deliver a safe and fully functional flexible working space, ensuring CMbE could maintain our customer commitments and deliver on time – which was even more impressive given the challenges presented by the current crisis.”

CMbE supplies can-making equipment to a wide range of customers worldwide, including all the major can-makers. Based in the UK, the company has specialised engineering teams in place to support customers on a global level.
