Fire halts production at Ball can plant

A fire has halted production at Ball Packaging Europe’s plant in Wrexham, UK.

Crews from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called to the site on Sunday (22 July) afternoon. Ball is assessing the damage and hopes to restore the plant to full production as soon as possible.

Six crews from Wrexham, Llangollen, Chirk, Deeside, Johnstown and Rhyl tackled the fire and brought it under control.

A statement from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service stated that the fire appears to have started in a specialist industrial curing oven.

The plant, which is based in Bridge Road, Wrexham Industrial Estate, produces about two billion beverage cans per year, mainly for soft drinks and beer. Founded in 1979, it has a workforce of 210 employees.

In a statement, Ball Packaging Europe said: “Details about the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are not known as yet. External experts and employees are currently evaluating the damage to be able to restore the plant to full production as soon as possible. The company believes that it will be able to almost fully offset the temporary production loss by drawing upon stocks and shifting production to other locations.”

The company added that there were no injuries to the workforce and no adverse environmental impacts in the community.
