Candour, a female sommelier-founded canned wine company with a focus on integrity, sustainability and joy, has announced its official launch in London and at candourwine.com. Candour curates limited editions of carefully selected wine from independent European winemakers, and packages them in single-serving aluminium cans.
Candour is the creation of Kat Mayhew and Guada Oliver. Mayhew is a sommelier with experience in the US and UK hospitality industry; Oliver worked as a brand manager for top Argentine wine brands in Buenos Aires. The two met in business school and decided to create a wine company focusing on providing delicious wine in cans.
“We love giving people the opportunity to experience delicious tasting wine,” said Mayhew. “Candour is an expression of that love in a way that feels right for the times we live in,” she continued.
Three wines launched this summer include:
- Pale Rosé, a blend of Sumoll and Xarel.lo grapes from Can Sumoi, in Penedes, Spain
○ Can Sumoi is a project started by childhood friends Pepe Raventos and Francesc Escala. They revitalise old, high-altitude vineyards with organic and biodynamic farming practices and make wines from local grape varieties such as Sumoll, Parellada, Garnacha Blanca, and Xarel.lo.
- Dry Riesling, from Domaine L&R Kox in Remich, Luxembourg
○ Corinne Kox is a forward-thinking third-generation winemaker. Her latest experiment is planting trees between rows of vines to promote biodiversity and to combat the effects of climate change in the vineyard.
○ Candour was awarded a gold medal for this wine at the International Canned Wine Competition held from 18-20 July 2023, in California. - Lively Red, a light, chillable red blend of Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt from Groszer Wein in Burgenland, Austria
○ Markus Bach and Edgar Brutler, the team at Groszer Wein, are making expressive wine from the region’s most famous grape, Blaufränkisch. Their 20 hectares of vines, growing in alpine slate soils, are in eastern Austria and are farmed organically.
The cans are 200ml in size and are available online at candourwine.com and through brick-and-mortar wine retailers and speciality grocery stores throughout the UK.
