Canned Wine Co is launching two new lines into the UK online grocer, Ocado, from December. The new launch aims to bring the canned wines to a wider audience, showcasing their unique terroir and varietal characteristics.

The premium single varietal range will focus strongly on their region of origin. From two key winemaking regions in Europe – a Verdejo from Rueda and a Gamay from the Loire – the wines will be sold in 250ml cans.

The Verdejo, described as ‘Vibrant & Zesty,’ is made by winemaker, Javier Sanz, whose family has been producing wines in Rueda for over 150 years.  Grown on sandy soils which forces the roots deep into the clay and lime subsoils, the vines are dry farmed, which gives a greater sense of terroir, as well as concentrated and flavourful citrus and orchard fruit.

The ‘Bright & Juicy’ Gamay is made by Lionel Gosseaume in the Loire Valley, whose objective with this wine is to showcase a sense of place. The vines grow on sandy clay soils with a gravelly topsoil, which brings out the freshness and vivacity that is typical of the Loire. The grapes are hand-picked late in the season to allow the skins to fully ripen while fully maintaining the acidity, and are whole bunched fermented then rested in stainless steel tanks for six to nine months.

Canned Wine Co buyer and co-founder, Ben Franks, commented: “We are delighted to be working with Ocado to launch these two new lines and bring our wines to a wider audience.  We have searched hard to find wines which really showcase their terroir, whilst displaying their varietal characteristics and are delighted to be partnering with these two new producers to launch these wines.”

The wines will retail for £5.50 per 250ml can on the Ocado website.
