Canned flower wins ExtravaCANza competition

A canned flower has come out on top in a nationwide search to find the most imaginative and creative use of empty drinks cans.

Launched in the UK in June by drinks cans recycling programme Every Can Counts, ExtravaCANza challenged lovers of canned drinks to turn their empty beverage cans into beautiful, crazy or practical creations for a chance to win a top prize of £1,000 worth of vouchers, plus a year’s supply of their favourite soft drink.

The winners were chosen by an online vote, and top prize went to David Pearson, who created the stunning canned flower.

Pearson, an offshore ship engineer currently based in the Arctic, created the flower out of drinks cans he found in the dustbins of the ship he was working on. The flower was originally intended for someone special to him, but who he is no longer with. Pearson, originally from Northumberland, said the flower now represents to him the recycled nature of love.

Diana Caldwell, from Every Can Counts, said: “We were thrilled by the variety, high level of creativity and great skill evident in all the ExtravaCANza entries. This competition has been a fun way to get people to look at the drinks can in a different light, and hopefully help them to recognise that the can is a valuable, sustainable resource.”
