Charles Johnson, president & CEO of the Aluminum Association, has released the below statement following President Donald Trump’s inauguration:

“We congratulate President Trump on his inauguration and look forward to working with his administration on our shared goal of growing and strengthening American manufacturing, including aluminium. President Trump has long recognised that a strong domestic aluminium industry is essential to our economy and defense industrial base, and he was early to take action to support the industry in his first term. And our industry is growing – investing more the $10 billion in new and updated US-based facilities in recent years. This includes building two new greenfield aluminium rolling mills for the first time since 1980. We stand ready to support the administration’s effort to keep US aluminium manufacturing strong.”

The Aluminum Association, which represents companies that make around 70% of the aluminium and aluminium products shipped in North America, recently released Aluminum for America: A Presidential Policy Brief, a new framework laying out strategic policy priorities for the incoming Trump administration and 119th Congress.

This plan tackles the major challenges facing the domestic aluminium sector and emphasises priorities key for a healthy, competitive US aluminium, including calls to:

  • Pursue strong, targeted trade enforcement
  • Collect and keep more aluminum for America
  • Recognise aluminium as critical for economic and national security
  • Invest in America by investing in aluminium
