Ball’s wine cans win award

A leading trade magazine in Germany has presented can maker Ball Packaging Europe with an award for the third year in a row.

Ball’s premium wine cans for winery Peter Mertes won the 2013 retail award in the multi-channel category at the EuroCis trade show in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Each year, the Handelsjournal trade magazine announces awards in 10 categories for the most promising products and solutions from retail suppliers, service providers and outfitters.

Mertes captured the jury’s attention as one of the first German users of premium wine cans from Ball. The family-owned winery markets a range of secco products in 20cl slim aluminum cans featuring quick response (QR) codes. These interactive codes open up a new communication channel with consumers: scanning them with a smartphone camera brings up the winery’s website on the consumer’s phone.

The premium wine cans carry Ball’s protected quality seal. This highlights the superior quality of Ball wine cans, which have a special interior coating, extra-thick walls and a special can end. This ensures constant quality for still and sparkling wines with a shelf life of at least 12 months.

In 2011, Ball beverage cans secured a gold award in the environment friendliness category. In 2012, an augmented reality campaign staged by Ball and the Edeka Hessenring grocery chain won gold in the sales promotion category.
