First can venture for mead maker

Blue Dog Mead is launching its first ever-canned beer for the US market.

The 12 oz aluminium cans, which will be made by Crown, will hold the Oregon-based brewer’s Green Collar Mead.

Mead, also referred to as ‘honey wine,’ is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of honey and water and has been brewed for approximately 4000 years.

Blue Dog Mead identified the opportunity for growth based on the success of cans it has seen in the premium beer, wine and craft beer markets.

The company partnered with Crown and also Craft Canning, a mobile canning service, for the transition to cans.

“It was critical for us to work with a partner that could provide support in all aspects of the packaging process, and we recognised Crown’s expertise in this field,” said Simon Blatz, owner of Blue Dog Mead.

“We really value the insight that Crown provided throughout the process and they helped us to get the most out of this packaging format to achieve our objectives.”

“The launch of Green Collar Mead in aluminium cans embodies Crown’s ability to help customers build their brands through packaging,” added Neill Mitchell vice president of marketing and strategic development at Crown beverage packaging North America.

Blue Dog Mead’s products are currently sold in more than 150 locations in the US, including Oregon, Tennessee and Washington.
