CMB apprentices win gold at WorldSkills

Three apprentices from CMB Engineering have won first place for the second time at the National WorldSkills UK competition which took place in Birmingham on the 13-15 November.

Dominic Trees, Patrick Devanney and Chris Renwick, were the three apprentices compete at this year’s Manufacturing Team Challenge. The contestants had to design, manufacture, assemble and test a complex piece of machinery to demonstrate their engineering expertise. The CMB group’s design was a remote controlled forklift engineered to lift up to 50kg of weight. The design was lightweight and sustainable as well as time and cost effective.

The team will compete again in May in the UK squad and will be faced with even more complex challenges for a chance to compete in the WorldSkills finals. The finals are to be hosted in Brazil in 2015.

George Moffat, who previously competed and helped to win first place at last year’s WorldSkills competition stated: “It is a great honour to have the opportunity to mentor this year’s apprentices for the Manufacturing Team Challenge, especially as I was previously in their position competing in the same competition. I am sure that my participation in this process has also served as a good source of inspiration for this year’s apprentices, as my journey reflects that of many other CMB apprentices who progress to work in leading Engineering roles with exciting career prospects within the company. From starting as an apprentice, I have gained valuable knowledge and experience which I use in my current role as a Development Engineer, where I get to travel around the world to service various machines from CMB’s product range”.
