Mullen celebrated in packaging industry

Nick Mullen, CEO and director of the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association (MPMA), has been awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Industry accolade at the UK Packaging Awards.

The award is made on direct recommendation from senior industry luminaries and was announced at the UK Packaging Awards in London on 11 November.

Mullen is long respected for his achievements in senior managerial positions in a career spanning over four decades, he was persuaded out of early retirement in 2007 to become director of the MPMA and face the challenge of making a sustainability case for metal in the face of complex environmental issues and government led initiatives.

Recent MPMA chairman, Martin Reynolds, VP external & regulatory affairs at Europe at Crown Holdings, says, “Nick’s extensive experience, astute understanding of the issues and his powerful influencing and negotiating skills made him the only man for the job.

“His crowning achievement is widespread recognition and acceptance of metal’s outstanding sustainability credentials, and that recycling rate is the essential sustainability measure for metal. He was also highly instrumental in obtaining acceptance of metal as a permanent material – a hugely important milestone for the sector.”

Dick Searle, chief executive at packaging federation, adds, “Nick has been a driving force and powerful advocate for metal packaging for many years. This award is richly deserved and worthy recognition of his many early achievements and the enormous contribution he has made during his time at the MPMA.”
