Resource efficient

Metal Packaging Europe (MPE) recently hosted a debate on metal’s sustainability at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The event, which was hosted in partnership with Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy MEP, brought together key influencers to promote metal resource efficiency in a sustainable Europe.

You can read more about how the event went in the March issue of CanTech International. We also have an interview with MPE secretary general Anders Linde. But to sum up, the MPE is aiming for zero metal waste to landfill. Linde acknowledges that this is probably not realistic but you have to admire the group’s ambition. If everyone did their bit, by recycling cans, aerosols, foil etc, then the average European recycling rate would quickly rise above its current average of 70 per cent.

There is now a real awareness about metal’s environmental credentials. And with kerbside recycling schemes increasing all the time the excuses to not recycle are running out.
