Accelerating action

This year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP28, is almost halfway through (taking place from 30 November – 12 December in Dubai, UAE), and while, as always, there have been controversies reported in the news – a record number of fossil fuel delegates in attendance being the main one – the positives are showing through.

Most notably it’s been amazing to see the global rallying undertaken by metal packaging leaders, spurred on in particular by the International Aluminium Institute (IAI), which has announced an ambitious target of reaching a 100 per cent recycling rate for the world’s aluminium beverage cans.

The IAI has said that to enable this to happen, there are three action points to be undertaken by policy makers in national governments, and four action points for the aluminium industry, as detailed in the company’s infographic below:

LinkedIn is abuzz with support for the call to action target, with industry leaders such as AMP, Ball, Canpack and Crown all having endorsed it. Marlen Bertram, IAI’s director of scenarios and forecast, has stressed that “Reaching these targets is a must for the aluminium sector to decarbonise in line with a 1.5-degree slope.” While it’s not going to be an easy process, if the industry continues to work collaboratively and hold itself and decision-makers accountable, there could be a realistic chance of reaching this 100 per cent goal.
