Making merry moves

The Bell Publishing Team at our 2023 Christmas lunch

The countdown to the festive period has well and truly begun, and last week it began with train strikes here in the UK, although Sarah and I were lucky to have made it home in one piece on the way back from Leeds.

The reason for our visit ‘up North’ on 5 December was that we were being hosted by CarnaudMetalbox Engineering (which you may have already seen on LinkedIn) at both its Shipley and Wortley sites.

CMB’s marketing manager, Caroline Symonds, was our tour guide for the visit and it’s always invaluable seeing can making equipment in real life to get a proper appreciation for the history of the industry and the technology that continues to drive innovation and skill in the metal packaging sector. Thanks to CMB for fitting us in during what is proving to be a very busy time!

In wider company news, we had our Bell Christmas lunch, Secret Santa and quiz on Friday last week (see the photo above of us all looking jolly). It was a great chance for us all to catch up and let loose, as I’ve seen many of you also doing on LinkedIn!

Following on from last week’s blog mentioning the IAI’s global aluminium recycling goal, the Institute has also made a further announcement which concerns a greenhouse gas initiative, with a reduction target to be set by 31 December 2024. Read more about that here.

In the steel recycling sector in Europe, targets are already being smashed. You can see on our news page this week that the goal to achieve a 70 per cent steel recycling rate target by 2025 has already been reached, which is more than encouraging news as we near the end of a challenging year.

Speaking about the end of the year, I am working to our deadline for the upcoming December/January edition of the magazine, which I must get on with, so I’ll make this week’s farewell a short one. The magazine will be worth the wait!
