Rexam’s staff take part in Can Challenge

Rexam Beverage Can has announced the results of its 2012 European Community Can Challenge.
The internal scheme, which is now in its second year, encourages Rexam employees from its European plants to work closely with their communities to recycle cans and help raise money for local charities.
The Community Can Challenge is run over a 10 week period in nine European countries where recycling rates could be improved. This year Rexam employees and their local communities collected five tons of cans – the equivalent of nearly 300,000 cans or 45 tons of CO2 savings.
Working closely with a local charity of their choice, a team at each participating plant competed in a number of categories for the chance to win £5,000 to give to their chosen charity. Along with the charity money, particular plants received individual awards for their efforts. These included:
Manisa (Turkey)- Weight Award for collecting 1.5 tons of cans.
Valdemorillo (Spain) – Community Engagement Award for generating a variety of activities to engage a range of different community groups in surrounding towns and villages.
Waterford (UK) – Innovation Award for engaging with local schools to create an interesting and engaging video to promote recycling, resulting in a fun alternative to the usual recycling message.
Wakefield and Luton (UK) received Special Commendation from the judging panel for collecting over a ton of cans, narrowly missing out on an award. Rexam’s La Selva (Spain) plant, participating in the challenge for the first time, also received a special commendation for their performance, which included appearing on local TV.
