Speira announces new sustainability label for aluminium

Global aluminium recycling and rolling company, Speira, has announced the release of a new sustainability label, RIVOS.
Speira’s focus on sustainability and transparency aims to simplify decision-making for customers seeking low-carbon, circular aluminium solutions. Recognising that well-informed choices are essential, Speira maintains transparency and consistency in the research and decisions that drive product design.
The launch of Speira’s new sustainability label, RIVOS, maximises resource efficiency and minimises product carbon footprints. By combining external scrap with low-carbon primary metal and tailoring production to regional renewable energy opportunities, RIVOS products advance the goal of net-zero emissions.
RIVOS represents aluminium produced with particularly low emissions, reinforcing Speira’s commitment to environmental stewardship. This label integrates efficient production methods, recycled content, and renewable energy sources, creating a high-quality, durable product with a reduced carbon footprint.
- Products labeled with a maximum of 4.5 t CO₂ / t Al
- Aiming to achieve 0.5 t CO₂ / t Al
- Incorporates low CO₂ primary aluminium, external scrap, and regionally sustainable energy sources.
Meaning behind the synergy
The slogans, “Reframing resources” and “Thinking in life cycles,” are core to Speira’s mission to minimise emissions through responsible resource management and lifecycle thinking. This innovative approach relies on a threefold synergy that differentiates Speira in the industry: high use of external scrap, low-carbon primary metal, and regional renewable energy. For example, in Norway, hydropower derived from fjords and waterfalls provides a clean energy source for production. The name RIVOS – inspired by the Latin word for “river” – reflects this connection to sustainable energy use.
Milestone on the way to net zero
Speira is actively reducing the CO₂ footprint of rolled products, moving closer to net-zero emissions. RIVOS further solidifies this progress by transparently displaying carbon intensity, providing assurance to customers and contributing to the environmental goals of end consumers. By choosing RIVOS, companies demonstrate their commitment to sustainability, advancing a circular economy.
Complementing the circularity focus
The process of recycling aluminium is remarkably efficient, saving up to 95% of the energy compared to primary production. Here, Speira’s first sustainability label comes into play, closing the circle: ORBIS, Latin for ‘circle,’ is based on the closed loop concept and stands for maximum transparency.
That’s why Speira believes its approach to the vague definition of recycled content is resonant: Only external scrap counts and contributes to recycled content. Speira differentiates between internal scrap that has been kept in its value chain for internal reprocessing and scrap from external sources outside Speira (including the value chain with Speira’s joint venture operations) without accounting for emissions that occurred somewhere in the history of this metal. This way Speira aims to track the physical reality of emissions as close as possible.
Ultimately, the primary goal is the reduction of carbon emissions. Speira says the methods it adopts, grounded in established standards, to quantify and convey the advantages of aluminium recycling, are essential tools in the collective mission to lower carbon footprints.
ORBIS offers aluminium solutions with high external scrap content, supporting sustainability without sacrificing quality.
- Labels products with at least 75% external scrap
- High recycled content with no compromise on quality
- Certificates available upon request
