Jobs under threat at Crown Food Europe

crown.logoMore than 100 jobs could go at Crown Food Europe after the company announced plans to close its plant in Perrywood, Worcester, UK.

In a statement the company said it is considering the future of the site because of a decline in sales in the food packaging sector.

A spokesperson for Crown confirmed that 116 people are employed at the site and that it has entered into a 90-day consultation process with all affected staff.

“I can confirm that we have announced the start of a consultation process at our Perrywood site in Worcester,” a Crown spokesperson said. “We are now in talks with trade union representatives about options for the future of the site, as part of a wider review of our UK and Ireland manufacturing and business support facilities. Changes within the food packaging sector have caused a consistent decline in sales and our manufacturing capacity across our four UK and Ireland food sites now unfortunately exceeds demand. To protect the future of the wider business and its employees, we therefore need to consider proposals for restructuring. No decisions have yet been made. Further information will be provided when the consultation process is complete.”

Crown Food Europe makes a wide range of metal containers in steel and aluminium for the processed and dry food markets. This includes two and three-piece cans together with a range of closures.

Crown’s other UK food sites are based in Braunstone, Neath and Wisbech. It also has a plant in Athy, Ireland.
