Tough year for UK soft drinks
Last year was a difficult one for the UK soft drink market according to new market analysis.
Soft drinks had some positive results in a “difficult year for the industry”, according to the 2013 UK Soft Drinks Report, Refreshing the nation, published by the British Soft Drinks Association (BSDA).
Overall volumes were down 2.5% to 14,235 million litres or 227 litres per person, with carbonates volume down 2.4% to 6440 million litres. However, retail value was up 3.3% to £14.955 billion.
Cans held 27% of the market placing them second behind PET 58%, but well ahead of dispense 10% and glass 5%. Energy drinks continued to the star performers up 9.7% to 475 million litres, average 7.6 litres per person. But, sports drinks were down 6.4% to 155 million litres, average 2.5 litres per person.
The 2013 UK Soft Drinks Report also found soft drinks are consumed in more than 99% of households. Gavin Partington, BSDA director general, said, “It’s been a tough year for the economy, but the soft drinks industry has come through it well.”
