Ardagh signs $250m US food can deal

Ardagh Group has signed a US$250 million deal to build two new state-of-the-art can making facilities.

The plan will see ConAgra Foods convert the vast majority of its shelf-sized cans from traditional three-piece technology to Ardagh’s flexible DWI (Drawn and Wall-Ironed) style.

The plant will also have the capability to manufacture Ardagh’s uniquely developed pressurised thin-wall DWI food cans (pictured, which the firm announced in April for the European market.

James Willich, Ardagh Group Metal Americas chief executive said, “We are delighted that ConAgra Foods chose to partner with Ardagh to leverage its innovative metal packaging solutions.

“Our approach to DWI will allow ConAgra Foods to convert many lower-volume, specialty shelf sizes to this process, something that has not been feasible with the traditional DWI installations.”

Commercial supply is due to start on 1 January, 2015.
