Spam plastic tub “major issue” for can industry

The move by the iconic canned meat Spam to introduce plastic tubs is something the metal can industry really needs to be concerned about, according to an industry expert.

Simon Jennings speaking at Euro CanTech, Today 28 June, told delegates metal was becoming tarnished with a reputation of being “old fashioned.”

Jennings, who is the founder of Nomis Consultancy, said, “I was really surprised by spam moving to plastic, it’s a major issue for the industry.”

Jennings went on to highlight several other brands, including Heinz baked beans, that have moved from cans to offering other packaging forms.

Although Heinz and Spam currently run cans alongside plastic packaging Jennings urged the industry to work on the development of peel off ends and other innovations to keep cans on top.
