Quality is key for Asian can maker

Saudi Arabia-based Mahmood Saeed Beverage Can and End Industry (MSCANCO) is using a new system to help improve quality and reduce spoilage at its plant.

Lighthouse Systems, a leading provider of MES software, is behnind the project. The firm has provided its Shopfloor-Online system to improve quality, identify SPC trends and provide greater visibility to quality check data at the can maker’s newly formed can and end manufacturing facility.

The objective of the project is to maintain online process control by monitoring quality parameters on a real-time basis by line technicians and quality auditors and provide a critical summary overview for supervisors and managers for quick decision making. Shopfloor-Online will be the primary tool that is used for process control and SPC analysis within the plant.

MSCANCO quality manager, John Paul, said: “We were seeking SPC and Shopfloor software solutions that meet the requirements of our high-tech can and end lines. We have selected Shopfloor-Online from Lighthouse for its proven performance within the can industry and versatility for data collection and reporting functions. Lighthouse Systems has provided us with technology to monitor and control our process performance and tools to improve the quality of our products and services.”

The overall objective for MSCANCO is to implement both a quality and production data collection solution. Production data collection will consist of capturing downtime records from the line, spoilage, production counts and OEE.

MSCANCO’s plant is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and has the capacity to produce one billion cans per annum. The new industry standard 204 size cans, 355ml, 330ml, 270ml range and 250ml slim cans are all produced at the plant.

The can-ends plant has a production capacity of eight billion CDL style easy open ends per annum.
