Canvironment Week 2011 launched at Metpack

Canvironment Week 2011 was officially launched at Metpack with the ringing of a sustainability bell earlier this week.

The global event, which is being organised by Indian can maker Hindustan Tin Works, aims to promote sustainability and the environmental friendliness of cans.

A number of delegates participated in the ringing of the sustainability bell at the company’s stand.

Atit Bhatia, who is the president of Canvironment Week, gave a presentation on the project and also highlighted the achievements of last year’s event.

Prior to ringing the sustainability bell, Frank Thorwirth, chairman and CEO of Messe Essen, and Wolfgang Niemsch, co-chairman of the Metpack Committee, surprised the audience with a special presentation of an award for the first time in the history of Metpack, that recognises the significant efforts of Hindustan Tin Works to initiate and promote Canvironment Week as a global sustainability platform. Sanjay Bhatia, managing director of Hindustan Tin Works (pictured centre), accepted the award on behalf of the company.

Canvironment Week president and senior vice president of Hindustan Tin Works, Atit Bhatia, said: “The special award and recognition by Messe Essen and Metpack is very motivating for us and we thank the jury.”

Canvironment Week is the first global metal can sustainability movement which aims to preserve the environment through decisive proactive global initiatives. Canvironment Week was originally launched last year when a number of activities were executed to promote sustainability through a global campaign.

A similar launch is planned at Interpack in Messe Dusseldorf on Sunday (15 May).
