Kerbside scheme leads to increase in metal recycling
Metalmatters has announced the results of a groundbreaking pilot project designed to increase kerbside metal recycling rates. The project, conducted in conjunction with two local authorities in the UK, delivered significant results including a 12.9% increase in metals recycled in the biggest trial area of 54,283 households.
Striking cans for cricket fans
A range of striking cricket-themed promotional cans which feature photo-like images are being manufactured by Rexam in the UK for brand owner A G Barr. Rexam has created eight promotional designs for the 330ml cans used for Rubicon’s Exoctic Fruit Juice drinks, promoting their Love Cricket campaign.

Steve Gogerty has been appointed chairman of Canned Food UK. Gogerty is a business development manager at Crown Food UK & Ireland and has more than 20 years’ experience in the canned food industry.
University students encouraged to recycle
A recycling initiative developed by Every Can Counts is encouraging students to recycle beverage cans at universities – in return for the opportunity to watch films. Known as the Can Film Festival, the initiative has been developed in conjunction with the National Union of Students, and rewards students with the opportunity to watch films, for free, by bringing along empty beverage cans to be recycled.
Prices paid for UBCs raised by Novelis
The price paid for used aluminium beverage cans (UBCs) in the UK has risen to £920 (US$1,476) per tonne. Novelis, the world’s largest recycler of aluminium beverage cans, has increased the price offered for baled and densified UBCs by more than eight per cent.
Premier Foods to sell canned food business to Princes
Food and drink group Princes has agreed to buy the canning operations of UK company Premier Foods in a deal worth £182 million (US$292.8m). Under the terms of the agreement, which is subject to Premier Foods’ shareholder and regulatory approval, Premier Foods’ sites at Long Sutton and Wisbech would transfer to Princes’ ownership.

Courtney to head up the Can Makers
Geoff Courtney has been appointed chairman of the Can Makers, an industry body which represents the UK manufacturers of beer and carbonated soft drinks. Courtney has more than 20 years experience in the packaging industry and takes over from Vince Major, who has held the position since 2009.

More than 300 jobs to go in Novelis closure
More than 300 jobs will be lost after Novelis confirmed its Bridgnorth foil rolling facility would close by the end of April. The aluminium firm first revealed it was considering closing the operation in September when it launched a 90-day consultation with the 319 employees at the UK site.
Red Bull celebrates F1 win with champions can
The design of the Red Bull can has been changed for the first time ever in the UK in celebration of its Formula One team’s victory in this year’s World Championship. Driver Sebastian Vettel took the driver’s title in November. He did so in the final race of the season, just a week after the team won the constructors championship.
