Nachtergaele joins MPE

Joris Nachtergaele has been appointed as director of external affairs at Metal Packaging Europe.

Metal Packaging Europe, is a trade body that represents the united interests of producers and suppliers of rigid metal packaging across Europe.

In his new role Nachtergaele (pictured) will be responsible for supporting the interests of MPE’s members in Brussels.

Following on from the endorsement of the ‘permanent material’ concept by the European Parliament earlier this year, the group will now look to build on this to ensure the entire supply chain is now united in gaining recognition for such materials in EU and Member State policies.

Nachtergaele started his career as a legal advisor to the Belgian National Parliament and then the Belgian Government. He added to his in depth knowledge of the European Parliament during his time spent heading the office of European Member of Parliament Mrs Brepoels.  In 2007, Nachtergaele joined Apeal as EU public affairs manager, and has since progressed to deputy managing director, where he combined his public affairs work with management of the association.

As director of external affairs for Metal Packaging Europe, Nachtergaele will engage with policy makers, environmental NGO’s and other relevant stakeholders to educate them in the targets set out in MPE’s manifesto, including the 80% recycling rate target and zero metal packaging to landfill, and explain how these targets can be achieved through using resources efficiently to create a true recycling society.

He said: “It is time for Metal Packaging Europe to take the next step. We have a unique platform which allows us to establish key contacts within the European institutions, exploring new thinking on how to deal with materials, packaging and waste across Europe leading to a constructive cooperation to explore mutual interests and goals.”
