Improved recycling rates in Europe
Apeal (the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging) has revealed that the recycling rate in Europe for steel food and beverage cans has risen again. Figures revealed at packaging show Interpack demonstrate how recycling rates of steel packaging for Europe in 2009 increased by two per cent to reach more than 72 per cent.
Recycling at work is on the up
Every Can Counts, the away from home drinks can recycling programme, has revealed that it helped businesses to collect 27 million used aluminium and steel beverage cans for recycling across the UK in 2010.
New holographic foil technology from Crown

Back on track
The latest statistics from BCME (Beverage Can Makers Europe) show that despite tough economic conditions last year, there was strong growth in the beverage can market in Europe. In 2010, the European beverage can market hit 54.1 billion cans, up 5.2 per cent from 2009. The UK market fared particuarly well and reached an important milestone in 2010, passing the nine billion can mark, up seven per cent on 2009.

Aluminium producer Novelis has announced a number of senior management appointments in an effort to accelerate its global integration strategy. These appointments include the creation of global roles in the areas of manufacturing excellence and recycling, as well as global product line management positions.

Can making giant Ball Corporation has been recognised for its progress on sustainability. The company has reduced its global energy use by two per cent and waste-to-landfill by six per cent.
Kerbside scheme leads to increase in metal recycling
Metalmatters has announced the results of a groundbreaking pilot project designed to increase kerbside metal recycling rates. The project, conducted in conjunction with two local authorities in the UK, delivered significant results including a 12.9% increase in metals recycled in the biggest trial area of 54,283 households.
Green politician visits Ball’s Hassloch plant

Cem Özdemir was shown the German plant’s digital printing line for beverage cans which features a globally unique technology brought to market by Ball Packaging after extensive research and development.
Entries invisited for BAMA’s Can Do awards
The British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA) has announced the launch of its Can Do Awards 2011 in a bid to recognise and reward the best local authority recycling campaigns that includes empty aerosols.
Can industry raises money for charity
A number of US can plants helped collect and recycle approximately 140 million aluminium beverage cans and subsequently raised more than $150,000 (€108,700) for charities across the country. Organised by the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI), the America Recycles Day Challenge, took place over 76 days and involved can companies and aluminium suppliers.
Crown expands beverage can production in Vietnam
Crown Holdings is set to expand beverage can production capacity in all three of its existing facilities in Vietnam. The company will add a second can line to its facility in Hanoi.
