Martens named CEO of Novelis
Philip Martens has been named president and chief executive officer of Novelis, a leader in aluminium rolled products and can recycling. Martens joined the company as president and chief operating officer in May 2009.

Revellers to drink from cans at Cologne festival
Carnival revellers in Cologne will be drinking from cans after the town council put a ban on glass. The town council has responded after many carnival revellers repeatedly stepped or fell into shards of glass. They now consider the risk of injury posed by glass shards too high after the streets were strewn with empty glass bottles and splinters in previous years.
Novelis to expand aluminium recycling at German plant
Novelis, a leader in aluminium rolled products and can recycling, is investing $18 million (€13m) into the construction of a new recycling centre at Aluminium Norf (Alunorf) in western Germany. Construction has already started on a multi-chamber melting furnace and ancillary equipment that will recycle 50,000 metric tons of aluminium scrap per year to feed the rolling mills of Alunorf, the world’s largest aluminium rolling complex.
Courtney to head up the Can Makers
Geoff Courtney has been appointed chairman of the Can Makers, an industry body which represents the UK manufacturers of beer and carbonated soft drinks. Courtney has more than 20 years experience in the packaging industry and takes over from Vince Major, who has held the position since 2009.
MCMA emands tax benefits for eco-friendly packaging
The Metal Container Manufacturing Association (MCMA) of India has demanded that the country’s government should provide tax incentives to promote environmentally friendly packaging.

Canvironment Week wins environmental award
Hindustan Tin Work’s Canvironment Week has been awarded the Environment Initiative of the Year Award at Ambrosia Indspirit 2010. Ambrosia Indspirit is an Alcobev trade event in Asia. This year it was held in Mumbai, India.
Can-Pack to build beverage can plant in Finland
Poland based Can-Pack is set to build a beverage can plant in Finland in an effort to meet the growing needs of customers in the Baltic countries. Under the project, which is costing almost €100 million ($132.2m), 33cl and 50cl aluminium cans will be produced at the factory, which will have an annual production capacity of 1.8 billion cans.
