Brasilata launches steel pail for plaster
Can making company Brasilata has launched a recyclable steel pail which can be used as a container for plaster. According to Brasilata, a good portion of the plaster market has been looking for lower cost packaging alternatives, especially to meet the lower income market needs.
Steel maker to halt production for a week
Production at Tata Steel’s tinplate works in Trostre, Wales, will stop for one week next month. More than 700 staff will be deployed to other areas like maintenance and training.
New ‘handy can’ size from Ball
A new compact can has been launched by Ball Packaging Europe. Pepsi Max, Diet Pepsi and Pepsi are the first drinks to be sold in the new 25cl format in the UK. The shorter and more compact 25cl can format is designed to stand out from the normal and attract attention at the point of sale.
Novelis expands in Asia
Novelis, the world’s leading producer of aluminium rolled products, has announced the opening of a new office in the Shanghai World Financial Center to expand the company’s presence in Asia. The company has appointed James Liu (pictured) as managing director, Novelis China, and director, sales and marketing, Automotive Asia.
Empac gains new members
European Metal Packaging (Empac), the association which brings together European producers of rigid metal packaging and their supply chain partners, has announced the addition of two new associate members. KBA-MetalPrint and Sidermec/Indumet will both support Empac in its mission to defend and promote the rigid metal packaging industry in Europe by conveying its many unique advantages.
Silgan to supply cans to Nestlé
Can maker Silgan has acquired Nestlé Purina PetCare Company’s steel can making assets for its pet food products. As part of the deal, the US company has also entered into a long-term supply agreement with Nestlé Purina PetCare Company.
New lid offers easier opening
Danish can maker Glud & Marstrand has launched a plastic laminated aluminium lid for rectangular meat cans. The new easyALUtop has been designed to reduce the opening force of a can.
Apeal to host summit
Apeal’s Steel for Packaging Summit will take place in Kosice, Slovakia, on September 20th 2011. Apeal (the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging) and US Steel Europe will co-host Steel for Packaging, Green solutions for Central Europe at the US Steel Europe plant in Kosice.
Envases buys up Danish can maker
Danish can maker Glud & Marstrand has been acquired by Mexican packaging group Envases Universales. The deal, which was completed on 1 July, is subject to the normal closing conditions.
Hindustan Tin Works wins IPA award
Indian can maker Hindustan Tin Works has won the IPA Innovation Award for its Canvironment Week initiative. The International Packaging Association (IPA) promotes the inherent material and environmental value of steel packaging.

Energy drink brand leader Red Bull has joined the drinks can recycling programme Every Can Counts as a funding partner. The news marks a major step forward for the programme, as Red Bull is the first drinks brand to become actively involved.
Lightweight metal crowns help brewer make savings
SABMiller has announced that its Peruvian subsidiary, Backus, has developed a new lightweight metal crown for beer bottles that could save the brewer US$12.6 million every year. In cooperation with Packaging Products Peru, Backus has developed a new, low-gauge bottle crown that will significantly reduce the amount of steel used in production and have a positive impact on the group’s raw material costs and CO2 emissions.
Wuhan Baosteel receives order for 20m cans
Chinese can maker Baosteel Packaging has gained an order of 20 million cans of Qingdao beer shortly after entering the high-end beer market. The company’s plant at Wuhan started production in February and is the first to make aluminium cans.
Can-Pack joins Every Can Counts as funding partner
Beverage can maker Can-Pack has joined the drinks can recycling programme Every Can Counts after committing funding for a three-year period. The company will join representatives from the other beverage can makers and aluminium and steel packaging recyclers on the national steering committee.
