Princes expands canned food operations
UK-based Princes has completed the acquisition of Premier Foods’ East Anglian canning operations. The acquisition includes two major UK canning sites at Long Sutton and Wisbech in East Anglia, along with a number of brands including Crosse & Blackwell, Farrow’s and Smedley’s.

US brewing company starts using cans
Baxter Brewing Company has become the first craft brewery in New England, US, to can its entire line of beers. Located in the historic Bates Mill in Lewiston, Maine, Baxter beers will be distributed throughout the state of Maine and are expected to expand into the rest of northern New England throughout this year and into 2012.
Eden Foods expands BPA-free cans into 29oz size
US organic products firm Eden Foods has broadened its range of Bisphenol A (BPA) free lined cans into a 29oz size. The company is now producing six new organic beans in 29oz family-size cans.
Premier Foods to sell canned food business to Princes
Food and drink group Princes has agreed to buy the canning operations of UK company Premier Foods in a deal worth £182 million (US$292.8m). Under the terms of the agreement, which is subject to Premier Foods’ shareholder and regulatory approval, Premier Foods’ sites at Long Sutton and Wisbech would transfer to Princes’ ownership.
Whisky in a can could be banned in Scotland
A new canned whisky, which is on sale in the Caribbean and South America, has come in for criticism from the Scotch Whisky Association. Panama-based company Scottish Spirits has launched the 33cl aluminium cans, the first time straight whisky has been sold in a can.

Ball Packaging Europe has signed an exclusive contract to manufacture and supply cans using Barokes Wines’ Vinsafe packaging process for wine in a can. Canned wines are currently experiencing double-digit growth in Europe and are becoming increasingly attractive to wine growers looking to reach younger consumers.
